About Our Director
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Geraldine Murray, TCRG, is an accomplished and well-known Portland Irish musician and dance teacher. She has been involved in Irish dance and music for over 40 years and is certified by An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha (The Irish Dance Commission) in Dublin, Ireland, since 1995. She’s a member of the Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America and the Western US Region of Irish Step Dance Teachers. Geraldine has also been an Irish dance teacher to the majority of internationally certified teachers in Oregon.
Her mother and paternal grandmother emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland. Similarly, Geraldine was fortunate enough to spend part of her childhood living in Ireland. Her Pittsburgh-area family is known for its dedication to keeping alive the traditions of Irish dance, music and culture. Since moving to Portland over 24 years ago, Geraldine has continued that dedication to fostering Irish music, dance and culture in Oregon and southwest Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
Geraldine studied Irish dancing under the direction of Theresa Burke TCRG, ADCRG, from Cleveland, Ohio. Burke School Dancers have been Regional, National and World Champions, with some currently performing in professional shows. As a child, Geraldine competed all over the East Coast of the US and Canada and assisted with classes in the Burke School in Pittsburgh. She has also studied other forms of dance including Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Dunham, African and Cuban Dance and holds a BA in Honors Philosophy from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Geraldine studied tin whistle under Irish Tin Whistle Master, L.E. McCullough, Ph.D. and performs regularly at local Irish establishments and festivals in the Pacific Northwest and her native Pittsburgh, PA.
Geraldine has choreographed dance and directed the music for locally produced Irish plays. She has collaborated with Asian Choreographer Chisao Hata in her "Drum Souls" project and worked with African Choreographer Bobby Fouther in “Woven Rhythms,” a 2001 project performed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Jefferson High School that combined African and Irish Step dance in a unique and inspiring way. Geraldine has lectured extensively on the history of Irish dancing at Portland State University and through the Oregon Historical Society. She has performed musically and danced with The Chieftains, The Aurora Chorus and as the opening act for the Grammy award winning Shawn Colvin. She has also helped with an Irish dancing segment in the CoHo production The Amazing Brenda Star and appeared with Joan Szymco's Choral Conspiracy accompanying the chorus with her hard shoe percussion.
